Burn Away Your Bad Habits 🔥
The thing I love about yoga is the depth and knowledge that comes out of my yoga practice. I’m constantly learning new things. A couple weeks ago I taught a class to usher in the fall equinox. I got my information from Guru Jagat and in her class she said that the solstices and the equinoxes are the most important days of the year. If you align yourself with the angels of the sun on these days it creates a propulsion mechanism. To propel yourself into the life that you want to live.
She talked about how many people will never find a meditation practice and they’ll never find anything deeper and that’s part of the samskaras and karmas that they are living. I thought that she said samsara, which in yoga means living on the wheel of reincarnation. Moreover, it’s kind of like the rat race of reincarnation, living life over and over again chasing desire, cravings and attachments. But she actually said samskara! And I had no idea what that meant, which was a little embarrassing because I realized that as I was teaching it.
I had to look it up and I fell in love with this philosophy. Samakaras are our bad habits or ingrained behaviors. These can be things that we physically do, like drinking too much or things that we think, like worrying too much. Samskaras can be something that we are born with or something we’ve learned from our environment. Either way we can all think of a bad habit that we’ve had for most of our lives.
Think of these behaviors or tendencies like seeds. Given the right conditions, these seeds can grow and flourish into a tree. And then we find ourselves unhappy and suffering from our negative behaviors. These tendencies are engrained in us and get stronger over time, like a stream or a neural pathway. For example, we may quit smoking and then something very stressful happens and we start smoking again.
The good news is that these pathways can be stopped. These pathways can be essentially erased with yoga. Yoga, meditation and japa (repetition of a mantra) creates spiritual heat in the body called tapas. This spiritual heat, tapas, burns up the the seeds of samskaras before they can flourish into trees of unhappiness. And all you have to do is yoga.
Over time with regular practice more and more seeds get burnt up. The part that I thought was so amazing is that you don’t even have to try. We’ve all been there, trying to change our habits and telling ourselves no, finding that we just want to do the thing even MORE! We don’t need to try, we just need to do yoga. Having a daily spiritual practice is like adding a log to your fire. The fire becomes bigger and burns away more seeds of samskaras. Over time we find ourselves happier and more at peace with ourselves & our actions. All you have to do it yoga. Amazing ❤️
